Whoa, back in Canada after 6 months away! What a mix of emotions.. happy to be home, relieved to be done with that job (and to be honest, Paris), but missing Europe already too. And most of all missing someone terribly.
Also slight ocd annoyance at being so behind on my dashboard after having no internet during my England trip.
The Catacombs… so you go from never having seen a human skeleton to seeing thousands upon thousands of them.
It is an ossuary below the city containing the remains of about 6 million people. When the cemetaries were overflowing and causing problems in the late 18th century they moved them to these underground mines. They were quite artistically arranged, see the heart I took a picture of above.
Translations of the inscriptions:
“Thus ends everything on earth:
Spirit, Beauty, Talent, Grace,
Short-lived like a fleeting flower
Blown down by the slightest breeze.”
“Happy is he who always keeps the hour of his death before him and spends every day dying.”
And one I didn’t take a picture of:
“They were what we are
dust, toy of the wind;
fragile like men.
weak like nothingness!”
